I’m a NYC-based filmmaker and film professor. My film work, as a director and producer, has been programed at film festivals and in gallery spaces nationally and internationally.
My films start with the relationship between memory and the digital image, I work with images both created and found, and through the editing process discover themes and concepts that give meaning and shape to the film. Some themes and questions that have arisen in my films: how are we filming - or can we film - social and natural disasters? How is trauma based image-making forcing new meaning in the material, and in us? How are both time and memory being digitally distorted by the images we make?
I am currently working on two feature-length experimental documentaries in my home-state of North Carolina: OF BISCOE and SKETCHES OF BEULAH LAND. Both are built around themes of family trauma, land and its memory, faith, and the cultural storytelling of the south.
As a producer, I mostly work on hybrid and essay films. I’ve collaborated with award-winning directors Kirsten Johnson, Marty Lucas, Elie Aufseesser, and Emma Francis-Snyder.
I’ve taught and developed courses in film production, screenwriting, non-fiction and experimental film, film history, film theory, and professional practice at several schools, including Columbia University, Hunter College, Pratt Institute, Elon University, and Quinnipiac University.
Currently, I serve as the Director of Production for Columbia University’s MFA Film Program, and also am the representative for the Green Film School Alliance which focuses on sustainability in film production.
